Nat Love was a famous cowboy. He was born in Tennessee in 1854. He was born into slavery. His father helped him learn to read and write. This was hard because laws at that time stopped Black people from learning.

Nat was very good at working with horses. He won money from horse sales. He used that money to move West when he was 16. He worked as a cowboy in Kansas and Arizona. He was a great shot with a gun. His friends called him "Red River Dick."

Nat claimed he won many prizes at a rodeo in 1876. Because of this, people called him "Deadwood Dick." He also wrote about a time he was captured by Pima Indians. He said they helped him get well. He later escaped on a pony.

Nat lived in many places. He worked on a railroad in Denver. In 1907, he wrote a book about his life. This book made him very famous. He died in California in 1921.
