A clipper is a special kind of sailing ship built for speed.

Most merchant ships are built to carry as much cargo as possible. Clippers are different because they prioritize moving quickly over carrying huge loads. This choice often meant they could not carry as much weight as other vessels. They were designed to be narrow and sleek to cut through the water.

To get more power, they used a very large total sail area. This helped them fly across the ocean at high speeds.

How a clipper works depends on its shape and its sails.

A fast hull is often described as being "sharp." You can imagine this like carving a shape out of a block of wood. The more wood you carve away to make the hull, the sharper it is. Extreme clippers had very sharp hulls for the most speed. However, this sharpness meant they had less room inside for goods. Medium clippers were a middle ground between speed and space. They had a flatter floor so they could carry more cargo.

The history of these ships began long ago in the United States. The Baltimore clipper started appearing near the end of the 18th century.

These early ships were small and often carried less than 200 tons. They were used for many things, including the illegal slave trade. Later, the name "clipper" became famous during a huge boom in trade. This era grew in 1843 because people wanted tea from China faster. In 1848 and 1851, people also needed fast ships to reach gold fields. This demand made clipper building a very big business for a while.

Many different countries built these famous vessels throughout history.

Most were made in British and American shipyards, but others came from France and Brazil. In 1839, the British ship Scottish Maid was launched in Scotland. It was the first British clipper and was built for speed. In America, the ship Rainbow was launched in New York in 1845. It was the first "extreme" clipper ever built. Another famous ship was the Flying Cloud, built in 1851. It set a record for the trip to San Francisco. It took only 89 days and 8 hours to finish that journey.

You can see how clippers changed the way the world worked.

Before these ships, moving goods across oceans took a very long time. Clippers made the trip from China to Europe much faster for tea. They also helped people reach California during the gold rush. However, their time as the main way to travel eventually ended. The opening of the Panama Railroad in 1855 changed things. Later, the Suez Canal opened in 1869. These new paths made the fast sailing era come to an end.
