Visitors love to walk on the old cobblestone streets. The city center looks much like it did a long time ago. New buildings must match this old style to keep the city looking historic.

This place has a very interesting story about gold. In 1695, gold was found at Rio das Velhas. This started the Brazilian Gold Rush. The city was first called Vila Rica, which means "Rich Village." Later, it became Ouro Preto, meaning "Black Gold." This name comes from gold covered in iron oxide.

The gold was so important that it helped make the city very large. In 1750, the city had about 80,000 people. At that time, New York had less than half that many people.

Ouro Preto was once a very powerful place. It was the capital of Minas Gerais from 1720 until 1897. In 1789, it was the birthplace of a movement called Inconfidência Mineira. This was an attempt to gain independence from Portugal. A leader named Tiradentes was part of this movement. The city was so wealthy that it attracted smart people from Europe. Famous artists like Aleijadinho created beautiful sculptures here. Many painters and poets also lived and worked in the city.

There are many things to see and do in the mountains. You can visit old churches like São Francisco de Assis. Some people even visit old gold mines. The Mina da Passagem is the largest mine open to the public in the world. The city also has a large university called UFOP. About 10,000 students live and study there. Many students live in shared houses called repúblicas. This tradition is very unique to this part of Brazil.

The weather in the mountains can change quite a bit. It has a tropical highland climate. Summers are usually hot and humid. Winters are mild and dry, but it can get very cold. In June or July, the temperature can even drop to -2 degrees Celsius. There was even a report of snow in 1843! Today, many people visit for the history or the Carnival parades. The oldest active parade block, Zé Pereira dos Lacaios, was started in 1867.
