It sits high in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains at an average elevation of 1,116 meters. The city is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status is due to its well-preserved Baroque colonial architecture. Baroque is a highly decorative style of art and building. The city center features cobblestone streets and old Portuguese buildings. New construction must follow the historical aesthetic of the area. This helps maintain the appearance of a colonial town.

The history of the city is tied to the discovery of gold. In 1695, gold was found at Rio das Velhas by Manuel Borba Gato. This event triggered the Brazilian Gold Rush. In 1698, the settlement of Vila Rica was established. Vila Rica means "Rich Village" in Portuguese. The city was later renamed Ouro Preto, which means "Black Gold." This name refers to gold covered in a layer of iron oxide.

The city became the capital of Minas Gerais in 1720. It held this position until 1897. At that time, the government moved to the planned city of Belo Horizonte.

Gold mining brought immense wealth to the region during the 18th century. This wealth allowed the city to grow very quickly. In 1730, the population was about 40,000 people. By 1750, it had grown to 80,000 inhabitants. During this period, the population of New York was less than half that number. The city also became a center for culture and intellect. Many smart people from Europe moved there to study and work. This period is often called Brazil's golden age.

The wealth of the gold rush fueled a specific artistic movement. This movement is known as "Barroco Mineiro," or Minas Baroque. It is seen in the architecture and many beautiful sculptures. The famous sculptor Aleijadinho created many works in this style.

Other notable figures include the painter Manoel da Costa Ataíde. Composers like Lobo de Mesquita and poets like Tomás António Gonzaga also flourished. Many churches in the city are decorated with real gold. Notable churches include Nossa Senhora do Pilar and São Francisco de Assis.

Political tension also grew during the colonial era. In 1789, Ouro Preto was the birthplace of the Inconfidência Mineira. This was a failed attempt to win independence from Portugal. A leader named Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes, was a key figure. He was hanged as a threat to future revolutionaries. Later, the city focused more on science and education. In 1876, the Escola de Minas, or Mines School, was created. This school helped provide the technology needed for mineral discoveries in Brazil.

Today, the economy of Ouro Preto is quite diverse. Tourism is a very important industry for the city. People visit to see the historic churches and old mines. The Mina da Passagem is the largest mine open to the public in the world.

Mining is still significant through industries like aluminum and iron. The city also has deposits of bauxite, manganese, and marble. A unique mineral found only in Ouro Preto is imperial topaz. Many shops sell soapstone handicrafts and jewelry made from local gemstones.

Ouro Preto is also a major university town. The Federal University of Ouro Preto, or UFOP, has about 10,000 students. These students participate in a unique living tradition. They live in shared houses called repúblicas. There are 66 university-owned repúblicas and 250 private ones. This system is unique in Brazil and shares traits with the University of Coimbra in Portugal. Some freshmen, called "bixos," must go through a period called "batalha." This is a type of hazing before they are accepted into the house. The final choice for new members must be unanimous among senior students.

The climate in the mountains is a tropical highland climate. This means summers are hot and humid. Winters are mild and dry. However, temperatures can drop quite low in June and July. It can reach -2 degrees Celsius during these months. In 1843, there was even a report of snow in the city. The city is also famous for its lively Carnival. The Zé Pereira dos Lacaios parade block is the oldest active block in Brazil. It was founded way back in 1867.
