In the 1690s, people found gold in Brazil. This started a very long gold rush. Adventurers called bandeirantes explored the land. They found gold in the mountains of Minas Gerais. One man, Manuel Borba Gato, found gold in 1695. This led to many more people moving to the area.

A city called Vila Rica was built. Later, it was named Ouro Preto. It became a very big city. By 1730, it had 40,000 people. Many people left their farms to find gold. Over 500,000 African slaves came to work. They were used as the workforce in the mines.

In 1718, gold was also found on the Cuiabá River. People traveled a long way to get there. They used large groups of canoes called monsoons. This trip was very hard. Travelers had to face rapids and mosquitoes.

Later, a British company opened a large mine. It was called the St. John d'el Rey Mining Company. This mine was in Nova Lima. It worked for 125 years. The gold rush changed Brazil forever.
