In the very center, there is a special emblem. This emblem is a golden star on a blue disc. The star has yellow rays coming out from it. These rays are all the same distance apart. They represent the equality of all Ethiopian people. The star itself is meant to show a bright future.

Each color in the flag has a special meaning. People often look at the colors to understand the nation's story. Red represents the blood spilled to defend Ethiopia. Yellow stands for peace and harmony between different groups. This includes many different ethnic and religious groups. Green is said to symbolize hope or the fertile land.

These colors have been important since the early 17th century. They were used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church long ago. The church used red for faith and power. They used yellow for peace and green for natural wealth.

The history of the flag shows many changes over time. Emperor Menelik II first adopted the modern tricolour in 1897. This happened one year after the Battle of Adwa. At that time, Ethiopia had defeated the Kingdom of Italy.

The first flag had red on top and green on the bottom. It even had a letter from the Emperor's name in the middle. After Menelik II died in 1913, that letter was removed. Later, the order of the colors was flipped. The flag we see today was officially adopted on 31 October 1996.

In the past, the flag looked quite different from the one today. Some royal flags featured a Lion of Judah. This was a crowned lion carrying a cross in the yellow stripe.

Other symbols from the Middle Ages included war drums and red umbrellas. People also used a golden globe with a cross on a pole. The current flag is much simpler than these older symbols. In 2009, the Parliament passed a law about the flag. This law made it a requirement to use the emblem. It also set fines for people who used the flag incorrectly.

The colors of Ethiopia are famous across the whole continent. When many African countries gained independence, they chose these colors. They did this to honor how Ethiopia resisted foreign occupation. Because of this, these are often called Pan-African colors.
