Amha Selassie was a leader from the country of Ethiopia. He was born Asfaw Wossen Tafari on July 27, 1916, in the walled city of Harar. His father was the famous Emperor Haile Selassie. His life changed when Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1936. He and his wife, Princess Wolete Israel Seyoum, had to leave their home. They lived in exile for a few years. They later divorced in 1941. After his father returned to power, the Prince went back to Ethiopia. He helped fight to drive Italian forces out of the city of Gondar. He also served as a leader in the provinces of Begemder and Tigray. He later married Princess Medferiashwork Abebe.

In December 1960, a difficult event happened in the capital city. A group called the Imperial Guard tried to take control of the government. While his father was visiting Brazil, the rebels held the Crown Prince in the palace. They made him read a radio message saying he would take the crown. However, the regular Army fought back and drove the rebels away. The Prince later said he was forced to do this. He always maintained that the move was not his own choice.
