Dutty Boukman was a famous leader of the Haitian Revolution. He was born around 1767 in the Senegambia region. This area is now the countries of Senegal and Gambia. He was born into a Muslim family. At that time, he was a Muslim cleric. Later, he was captured and forced into slavery. He was taken to Jamaica first. Then, he was sent to Saint-Domingue, which is now Haiti.

Boukman had a job that helped him lead. He worked as a coach driver on many plantations. This job gave him more movement than others. He could travel between different estates. He used this time to share news. He also helped people talk about resistance. During this time, he met Jean-Jacques Dessalines. They were both enslaved people living near each other. They formed a strong bond to help their cause.

In August 1791, a very important meeting took place. It happened at a place called Bois Caïman. Boukman and a priestess named Cécile Fatiman led the ceremony. This meeting helped start a large slave revolt. Many leaders like Jean-François and Biassou were there too. They made an oath to fight for freedom. This event is a big part of Haiti's history. Some say it helped start the Haitian Revolution.

Boukman led many people in the revolt. He gathered people from the Dutilh and Noé estates. His group moved north to find more fighters. They visited places like Molines and Sacanville. Soon, his force grew to about 15,000 people. They marched toward the city of Le Cap. However, the fighting was very dangerous. French soldiers killed Boukman in November 1791. He died while defending a base at Fond Bleu.

People still remember Boukman today. He is a symbol of freedom in Haiti. Some people call him a guiding spirit. A band named Boukman Eksperyans honors him. His name even appears in books and movies. Many people see him as a hero of the revolution. His life shows how people fought for their rights. He remains a key part of how Haiti began.
