The Haitian Revolution was a major fight for freedom. It took place in a French colony called Saint-Domingue. This land was now the country we know as Haiti. It was a very special event in history. It was one of the only times enslaved people won a war to start their own nation. This new nation was ruled by people who were once captives. This revolution changed how many people thought about slavery in the Americas.

Life in Saint-Domingue was built on sugar and coffee. Many people worked on large farms called plantations. Most of these workers were enslaved Africans brought from far away. They worked under very harsh and cruel conditions. Many people died from diseases like yellow fever. In fact, half of the new arrivals died within one year. The white owners often gave them very little food or shelter.

Conflict grew between different groups of people. There were white colonists and free people of color. The free people of color often had mixed African and French roots. They were often educated and owned property. In 1790, a man named Vincent Ogé led a revolt. This helped free people of color get citizenship in 1791. This event caused more fighting and made the colony unstable.

On August 22, 1791, a massive slave revolt began. This was the largest uprising of enslaved people in a long time. A famous leader named Toussaint Louverture became a great general. He used new ideas about liberty to lead his people. The rebels fought against French rule for many years. They showed great strength and organization under pressure. They fought hard to defend the freedoms they won.

Finally, the revolution ended on January 1, 1804. This was the day Haiti became an independent country. The people had successfully ended French rule and abolished slavery. This victory shocked many slave owners in other lands. It proved that people could fight for and keep their own freedom. Even today, this moment is a huge part of world history. It showed the world that the fight for rights was powerful.
