Long ago, the Taíno people lived on the island. They arrived from Central or northern South America. They were skilled at making pottery and farming. The island was divided into five areas led by chiefs. These chiefs were called caciques.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived on the island. He started the first European settlement at La Navidad.
Later, the western part of the island became a French colony. They called it Saint-Domingue.
Life in Saint-Domingue was very difficult for many people. The French built large farms for sugar and coffee. These farms were worked by many people brought from Africa in slavery.
The enslaved people often kept their African traditions and religions. Some even practiced Vodou in secret. In 1791, a massive fight for freedom began. This was the Haitian Revolution.

By 1804, Haiti became a free and independent nation. It was the first country in the Americas to officially end slavery. This was a very important moment in history.
However, the years that followed were often hard. Haiti faced many political problems and owed money to France. From 1915 to 1934, U.S. forces occupied the country.
Later, the Duvalier family ruled the country for many years.
Today, Haiti is a place with a very large population. There are about 11.4 million people living there.

Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, is a Caribbean nation located on the island of Hispaniola.
It occupies the western portion of the island. Haiti shares this landmass with the Dominican Republic. To the east of Haiti lie the islands of Cuba and Jamaica. The Bahamas are located to the south. The name Haiti has deep roots in indigenous history. It comes from the Taíno language. The name means "land of high mountains."
This name originally referred to the entire island of Hispaniola. The revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines restored this name to the independent state. He did this to honor the Amerindian people who lived there first. Some believe the name also has African origins. In the Fon language, the phrase Ayiti-Tomè means "From nowadays this land is our land." In French, a diaeresis is used over the "i" in Haïti. This mark shows that the two vowels are pronounced separately. While English speakers often ignore this, the most common pronunciation is "HAY-ti."
Before European arrival, the island was home to diverse Native American groups. Archaic Age people arrived from Central or northern South America around 6,000 years ago. These early inhabitants were largely hunter-gatherers. By the 1st millennium BC, the Arawakan-speaking ancestors of the Taíno began migrating to the Caribbean. They practiced intensive agriculture and produced pottery. The Ostionoid culture is the earliest evidence of these ancestors, dating to around 600 AD.
Taíno society was organized into five caciquedoms. These were political regions led by a chief, known as a cacique. These regions included Magua, Marien, Jaragua, Maguana, and Higüey.
European contact changed the island forever. Christopher Columbus landed on December 6, 1492. He claimed the land for the Crown of Castile. His ship, the Santa María, ran aground near modern-day Cap-Haïtien.
The Spanish established the settlement of La Navidad. Over time, Spanish rule declined as they focused on mainland riches. This left the western part of the island open to French buccaneers. In 1697, the Treaty of Ryswick officially divided the island. France received the western third and named it Saint-Domingue.
Saint-Domingue became a highly profitable but brutal French colony. The economy relied on sugarcane and coffee plantations. These were worked by vast numbers of enslaved Africans. By 1788, the population included 700,000 enslaved Africans and only 25,000 Europeans.
The French implemented the Code Noir to regulate slave treatment. Despite these laws, the colony was extremely violent. Enslaved people often practiced Vodou by secretly mixing it with Catholicism. Many escaped to the mountains to form autonomous communities called maroon settlements.
The Haitian Revolution began in August 1791. This massive slave rebellion was inspired by the French Revolution. Leaders like Toussaint Louverture guided the movement toward freedom.
The revolution resulted in several historic achievements. Haiti became the first sovereign state in the Caribbean. It was also the second republic in the Americas. Most significantly, it was the first country in the Americas to officially abolish slavery. It remains the only country in history established by a slave revolt.
Following independence, Haiti faced immense challenges. The 19th century was marked by political instability and debt to France. The United States occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934.
Later, the Duvalier family held dictatorial power from 1957 to 1986. In recent decades, the country has struggled with economic crises and natural disasters. A catastrophic earthquake struck in the 2010s.
Today, Haiti is a founding member of the United Nations. It remains a vital part of the Caribbean political landscape.
