Boyer wanted France to recognize Haiti as a free nation. In 1825, he signed a deal with France. Haiti had to pay a large amount of money to France. This was a hard thing for the country. The debt was very big. It made it hard for the government to build things. Boyer ruled until 1843. Then, he lost support and left his job.
