The French colonial empire was a huge collection of lands ruled by France. These lands included colonies, protectorates, and mandate territories. This empire is often split into two different parts. The first empire lasted from the 16th century until 1814. Most of those lands were lost or sold by that time. The second empire began later, starting with the conquest of Algiers in 1830.

France built its empire in different ways across the world. In the Americas, they focused on the fur trade. This helped them build connections with local First Nations communities. In the Caribbean, they built large plantations to grow food. These farms were run using slavery, which was a very sad and unfair system. The empire also worked through trade. Colonies sent raw materials to France, and France sold manufactured items back to them.

History shows how the empire grew and changed over many years. In the early 1500s, French explorers began looking at the Americas. Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec in 1608 to help the fur trade. In the 1600s, France also started trading in Asia. King Henry IV helped create the first French East Indies Company in 1604. By the time World War I was near, France had the second-largest empire in the world.

Many people had different ideas about how to rule these lands. Some leaders believed in a "civilizing mission." They wanted to spread French language and values to everyone. A man named Jules Ferry said it was a duty to do this. However, other politicians like Georges Leygues disagreed with this plan. They argued that many people in the colonies already had brilliant civilizations. In reality, people living in the colonies often had fewer rights than people in France.

After World War II, the empire began to change forever. Many people in the colonies started movements to gain their freedom. There were big conflicts in places like Indochina and Algeria. After these hard times, most colonies became independent countries around 1960. Some small parts of the empire stayed connected to France as overseas territories. Today, France and these former colonies still share links through language and culture.
