The French colonial empire was a vast network of territories under French control. These lands included colonies, protectorates, and mandate territories. Historians divide this history into two distinct eras. The first empire lasted from the 16th century until 1814. During this time, France established presence in the Americas and India. Most of these early possessions were eventually lost or sold. The second empire began later, marked by the conquest of Algiers in 1830.

The mechanism of the empire relied on a specific economic relationship. The colonies acted as sources of raw materials for the metropole, which is the home country of France. In return, the colonies purchased manufactured items produced in France. This system helped drive trade across the globe. After the Franco-Prussian War, France sought to rebuild its empire to restore its prestige. Acquiring new lands was seen as a way to regain economic and military power. It also provided a source of manpower during the world wars.

There were different types of colonial settlements and methods of rule. In North America, the French focused on the fur trade. This led to a sparsely populated empire centered around the St. Lawrence River Valley. In the Caribbean, the empire was built on large food-producing plantations. These plantations were sustained through the African slave trade, a system of forced labor. In some areas, like Algeria, France sent many settlers. These Europeans held significant political and economic dominance over the local population.

The history of the first empire began with early explorers. In the early 16th century, travelers like Jacques Cartier explored the Americas. The formal story of New France started in 1605 with the foundation of Port Royal. Later, in 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec. This became the capital of a large fur-trading colony. In Asia, King Henry IV encouraged trade through the creation of the first French East Indies Company in 1604. By the eve of World War I, France held the second-largest empire in the world.

Ideology played a major role in how France managed its territories. A central idea was the *Mission civilisatrice*, or "civilizing mission." This policy aimed to spread French language, institutions, and values. Leaders like Jules Ferry argued that France had a "duty to civilize" others. However, this was highly contested by other politicians. Georges Leygues argued that many colonized populations already had brilliant, long-standing civilizations. In practice, colonial subjects lived under unequal legal systems. They were rarely granted full citizenship despite French republican principles.

The end of the empire was marked by significant conflict and change. During World War II, Charles de Gaulle used the colonies as a base for the Free French. After 1945, anti-colonial movements grew stronger across the globe. Revolts in Indochina and Algeria were very costly for France. These conflicts eventually led to the loss of those colonies. By 1960, a period of relatively peaceful decolonization occurred in many other regions. The French Union, established in 1946, helped manage this transition until 1958.

Today, the legacy of the empire remains through several connections. Some former colonies are now integrated as overseas departments and territories. These territories cover 119,394 square kilometers and are home to 2.8 million people as of 2021. Links persist through *La francophonie*, which is a community of French-speaking people. There is also continued economic and military connection, such as the use of the CFA franc. Many future leaders of independent nations were actually educated in France. They used French republican ideals to argue for their own independence.
