Many people lived in New France to trade furs. The French made friends with local First Nations groups to help with trade.

France also had lands in the West Indies. These were islands in the Caribbean.

Life on these islands was hard. They used slavery to run large farms. This was a very sad and unfair way of life.

Later, France built a second empire. Most of these new lands were in Africa.

They also held land in Asia. France wanted to spread its language and ways of life.

After World War II, many people fought for freedom. They wanted their own countries. Most colonies became independent by 1960. Today, France still has links to these places. Some lands are still part of France.
