Colonialism is a way that one group of people controls another land and its people.

This control is often about power and money. A distant home country, called a metropole, makes the rules for the new territory. The people in charge often claim they are better than the local people. They might say they have a mission to change how others live. This creates an unequal relationship between the two groups. The people being ruled are often kept in a lower social position.

There are several different ways that colonialism works. In settler colonialism, many people move from their home to live in the new land. They often try to replace the people who were already living there. In exploitation colonialism, a country focuses on using the land's riches. They might use natural resources or the work of local people for their own gain. Some colonies are set up mainly for trade opportunities. This is called trade colonialism. There is also internal colonialism, where power is uneven within a single state.

History shows that these systems spread across the entire world. European empires grew very large during the modern era. This expansion began in the 15th century and lasted until the mid-20th century. By the year 1800, colonial lands covered 35% of the Earth's land. This amount grew much larger over time. By the start of World War I, colonies covered 84% of the world. Many of these empires used large companies to manage their trade and power.

These changes often had a deep impact on local cultures and societies. Colonial rules could force people to leave their old traditions behind. This sometimes happened through programs like residential schools. These changes created new, mixed populations. You can see this in groups like the mestizos in the Americas. Other groups include the Anglo-Indian or Eurasian Singaporean peoples. In the Dutch East Indies, many settlers were known as Indo-Europeans. These different backgrounds created new ways of living and being.

Eventually, many colonies began the process of decolonization. This is when colonies work to become independent nations. This movement started as early as the 18th century. However, a very large wave of independence happened after World War II. Most of these changes took place between 1945 and 1975. Even though these empires ended, their effects remain today. The old rules can still affect how countries grow and develop. Some scholars even use the term neocolonialism to describe modern versions of this control.
