Fijian is a beautiful and important language. It is spoken by about 350,000 to 450,000 ethnic Fijians. People use it as their native way of speaking. In the country of Fiji, it is a national language. It shares this special status with English, Standard Hindi, and Fiji Hindi. Many people believe this language is vital for the nation. It helps bring a multicultural society together as one.

Learning how the language works is quite interesting. Fijian is a VOS language. This means the order of words follows a specific pattern. The standard version is based on the Bau dialect. This dialect comes from the East Fijian group. The language also uses the Latin script for writing. This is the same set of letters used in English. Some letters represent sounds that are very unique. Scholars even added new letters in the 1980s. These additions help people write words from other dialects.

The history of Fijian goes back a very long time. The first settlers brought the language to the islands 3,500 years ago. For thousands of years, it was the only language spoken there. In 1835, Methodist missionaries from Australia arrived to help. They worked hard to create a written form. By 1840, they had a full writing system. They even published books about the different dialects. After Fiji gained independence in 1970, the language grew more. It is now used on radio, television, and in books.

Fijian belongs to a very large language family. This family is called Austronesian. It is part of the Malayo-Polynesian group. Fijian and Polynesian languages share a common ancestor. Because of this, they share many similar words. These are called cognates, which means they have the same origin. Some words in Fijian actually came from Tonga. This happened especially in the eastern dialects of the islands.

There are many specific rules for using the language. For example, the pronoun system is very rich. It recognizes three persons: the speaker, the listener, and others. It also uses four different numbers for groups. There is singular for one person. There is dual for two people. There is also a special word, paucal, for small groups. This is used for people with a close relationship. Finally, there is a plural form for larger groups.
