The Kingdom of Rarotonga was a place in the Cook Islands. It began in 1858. At that time, high chiefs called ariki led the people.

Missionaries worked with the ariki to make new laws. These laws stopped fighting. This helped the islands stay calm and stable.

In 1888, Queen Makea Takau asked Britain for help. She feared the French might invade. Britain agreed to make the islands a protectorate. A protectorate is a land that a larger country protects.

A man named Frederick Moss helped the leaders. In 1890, he helped them form a General Council. This was the first government for the whole island. In 1893, the name changed to the Cook Islands Federation.

Later, things changed again. People in New Zealand wanted to run the islands. In 1900, New Zealand took control. The chiefs signed a paper to agree. By 1901, the ariki lost their power. The islands became part of New Zealand.
