Queen Pōmare IV ruled Tahiti. She followed the Protestant faith. In 1836, she sent French Catholic missionaries away. This made France angry. A French leader named Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars arrived. He forced the queen to sign a treaty. This treaty made Tahiti a French protectorate. A protectorate is when a stronger nation helps rule a smaller one.

The queen did not want French rule. She tried to ask Great Britain for help. The French took her power and sent her away. She went to live on the island of Raiatea. After she left, Tahitian people fought back. They used guerrilla warfare. This means they used quick attacks in the mountains. They knew the land well, but they had fewer tools than the French.

France also tried to take other islands. They fought Queen Teriitaria II of Huahine. She defeated the French forces in 1846. In the end, Queen Pōmare returned to Tahiti. She agreed to rule under French protection. France and Britain signed a deal in 1847. This deal let some nearby islands stay free.
