It was between France and the islands.

A queen named Pomare IV led the people. She wanted to stay free. France wanted to rule the islands instead.

The queen had to leave her home. She went to live on a nearby island. She later came back to rule again.

People fought in the mountains and valleys. They used what they knew about the land. This helped them fight for a long time.

In the end, the queen and France made a deal. Some nearby islands stayed free. It was a big change for the islands.
