A protectorate is a special kind of deal between two lands. One land is a strong power. The other land is a smaller state. The smaller state gives up its own foreign policy. This means it lets the strong power handle its relations with other lands.

In return, the strong power helps defend the smaller land. This deal is often made through a treaty. A treaty is a formal legal agreement. A protectorate is not the same as a colony. A colony is owned by a strong power. A protectorate keeps its own laws and leaders. It stays a separate state on paper.

This has happened for a long time. In old times, the Roman Republic had many such states. They provided much of the manpower for Rome.

Some deals are very friendly. These are called amical protections. The strong power helps for moral reasons. It might also want to stop a rival power. In modern times, some very small states still use this way to stay safe.
