Suzerainty

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A suzerain is a powerful state. It has influence over another land. This other land is called a vassal. The vassal state can rule itself. It makes its own internal choices. However, the suzerain controls its foreign rules and trade.

In ancient China, this happened often. Powerful leaders used a system of gifts. This was called the tributary system. Smaller states sent envoys to China. These envoys showed respect to the Chinese emperor. In return, the emperor gave gifts and wealth. This helped keep peace and trade moving. Many states in Asia followed these ways. They did this to stay safe and trade easily.

In the ancient Middle East, leaders used treaties. These were written promises. The Hittites and Egyptians used these. A treaty often told a story. It listed good things the leader did for the vassal. This showed the leader was kind. The treaty had rules to follow. It also had blessings for good behavior. It had curses for breaking the rules. People believed gods watched these promises. They even shared a meal to seal the deal.
