Suzerainty

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sometimes, one big land rules over smaller lands. The big land is called a suzerain. The smaller lands are called vassals. The big land makes some rules for them. But the small lands still rule themselves. They can make their own choices.

In old China, this happened a lot. Small lands sent gifts to the big land. This helped everyone stay at peace. The big land would give gifts back. It was a way to trade.

In the past, people used special papers. These papers were called treaties. They were like promises between lands. The papers listed the rules to follow. They also listed the gifts to send.

Some rules even mentioned gods. People believed the gods watched the promises. If they kept the rules, things went well. If they broke them, bad things might happen.

It was a way for many lands to live together.
