Sometimes a small land has a helper.

This helper is a strong country. The strong country keeps the small land safe.

The small land still makes its own rules. It can pick its own leaders. This is different from a colony.

In a colony, the strong country takes control. In a protectorate, the land stays separate. They sign a paper to work together.

This has happened for a very long time.

Long ago, old groups did this too. It helped them stay strong.

Many lands used this to find peace. It is a way for lands to be friends.
