In Ancient Greece, one city-state could rule others. This was called hegemony. Later, in the 19th century, the word changed. It began to describe how one group leads a whole society.

An Italian thinker named Antonio Gramsci had new ideas. He spoke about cultural hegemony. He said a ruling class uses ideas to keep power. They make their way of life seem natural. This helps them stay in charge without always using force.

In world politics, hegemony is different from an empire. An empire often rules everything inside a land. A hegemon mostly controls how other states act on the outside.
