After World War II, many nations began to lead themselves. This change is called decolonisation. Some countries did this in a slow way. Australia and New Zealand were part of this process. They gained more power over time. Australia gained its own government in the 1850s. New Zealand did this in 1856.

Nauru became independent in 1968 after a peaceful campaign. Fiji became its own nation in 1970. Some places, like the Cook Islands, stay in free association with New Zealand.
