Many countries have more than one national day. These days are often public holidays. This means people may get a day off.

Countries pick different dates to celebrate. Some celebrate the day they became free. This is often called Independence Day. Other nations celebrate becoming a republic. A republic is a type of government. Some days honor a ruler. They might celebrate a birthday or a day a leader took power. Other days honor a patron saint. A patron saint is a holy person who protects a place.

Most national days started in the 1800s or 1900s. This was during a time of nationalism. Nationalism is a strong feeling of pride in one's country. Not every land has an official national day. Denmark and the United Kingdom do not have one. Denmark has an unofficial day. It is called Constitution Day. This day honors the rules the country follows.
