He traveled to Hawaii to help people. At that time, many people had a disease called leprosy. This sickness was very hard to treat. The law said sick people must live in a special place. They lived on the Molokai peninsula. This place was far away from others.

Damien arrived in 1873. He did more than just teach religion. He helped the community grow. He built houses, schools, and roads. He even made a large water tank. He helped with medical care too. Damien lived with the people as an equal. He ate their food and shared their lives. After eleven years, Damien found out he had leprosy too. He did not stop his work.
