This area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Serra was often called the "Apostle of California" because of his work there. He helped found eight Spanish missions in California. These missions stretched from San Diego all the way to San Francisco.

Serra's journey to become a priest involved many years of hard study.

He grew up in the village of Petra on the island of Mallorca. As a young boy, he worked in fields with wheat and beans. He also helped his parents tend to their cattle. Later, he studied many difficult subjects like logic and theology. He even earned a doctorate in theology.

He taught philosophy to over 60 students at a college. This training prepared him for his future life as a missionary. He wanted to travel far to reach new people.

In 1749, Serra traveled to the Americas to begin his mission work.

He and his companions traveled on a rough road called the Camino Real. This path went through forests, plains, and high mountains. While most friars rode horses, Serra chose to walk. He wanted to follow the rules of his patron saint, Francis of Assisi. During this long walk, he suffered a painful wound on his leg.

He believed a mosquito bite or an insect caused it. This wound stayed with him for the rest of his life. He arrived in Mexico City to join a training center for missionaries.

Serra worked in many different places during his life.

Between 1750 and 1760, he founded five missions in the Sierra Gorda mountains. He worked with the Pame people in that region. Later, he moved to Alta California to start more missions. His work in California happened while the land was under Spanish control.

These missions became important parts of the history of the West Coast. He spent many years traveling and building these new communities.

Today, people have very different ideas about Junípero Serra.

Some religious leaders have honored him for his faith. Pope John Paul II called him "blessed" in 1988. Later, Pope Francis made him a saint in 2015.

However, many Native American tribes disagree with how he is remembered. They say his missions led to the hard treatment of their people. They criticize the way his work changed their lives. Because of these different views, his legacy is still a subject of much debate.
