In the territory known as Alta California, he founded eight Spanish missions. These missions stretched from San Diego to San Francisco during the Spanish occupation. Because of his efforts, he earned the title "Apostle of California."

Serra was born Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer in 1713.

He grew up in the village of Petra on the island of Mallorca. As a child, he worked in the fields with his parents. He helped cultivate wheat and beans and tended cattle. He also attended a primary school at the local church. There, he studied reading, writing, mathematics, and Latin. He was also gifted in liturgical song and Gregorian chant.

His path to the priesthood involved deep academic study. At age 16, he studied philosophy in Palma de Majorca. In 1730, he entered the Franciscan Order as a novice. He chose the name Junípero to honor Brother Juniper. During his novitiate, he studied logic, metaphysics, cosmology, and theology. He lived a life of rigorous discipline and prayer. In 1737, he became an ordained priest. By 1739, he was teaching philosophy to over 60 students. He eventually earned a doctorate in theology from the Lullian College.

He and a companion traveled from Veracruz to Mexico City. They used the Camino Real, a rough road through many landscapes. This route included tropical forests, dry plains, and volcanic mountains. While others rode horses, Serra chose to walk. He wanted to follow the rules of St. Francis of Assisi. During this journey, he suffered a painful wound on his leg. He believed a mosquito bite or an insect caused the injury. This wound remained with him for the rest of his life.

Serra's work in Mexico included the Sierra Gorda region.

Between 1750 and 1760, he founded five missions there. He worked with the Pame people, who lived in the jagged mountains. The Pame were known for their hunting and agriculture. Serra used religious rituals to connect with the local people. One example was a procession involving 14 stations. He led these marches while carrying a heavy cross. This work helped establish the religious presence in that area.

His influence expanded significantly when he moved to California.

He established a chain of missions to serve the Spanish province. These missions served as centers for religious and social life. The missions were part of the larger Spanish colonial system. They helped define the history of the American West Coast. Serra's work in these areas was both vast and physically demanding. He traveled long distances to reach these new settlements.

Today, Serra is a figure of great debate and complex legacy.

In 1988, Pope John Paul II beatified him. In 2015, Pope Francis canonized him as a saint. This happened during a visit to Washington, D.C. However, many Native American tribes strongly criticize his actions. They accuse him of presiding over a brutal colonial subjugation. Critics cite instances of mandatory conversions to Catholicism. They also point to the abuse of Native American converts. Consequently, his life is viewed very differently depending on the perspective.
