Johanna Spyri was a very famous writer from Switzerland. She is best known for her wonderful stories for children. Her most loved book is titled Heidi. This story follows an orphan girl living in the Swiss Alps. It shows the beautiful mountain landscape in a very clear way. People in Switzerland see her as a great icon. Her face even appeared on a postage stamp in 1951. It was also on a 20 CHF coin in 2009.

Spyri used her own memories to build her stories. As a young girl, she spent summers near Chur. This area is in the land of Graubünden. She later used these mountains as the setting for her novels. She lived in the city of Zürich for much of her life. There, she began writing about life in the countryside. She wrote her famous book Heidi in just four weeks. This shows how much she loved her subjects.

Her life had many different chapters. She was the daughter of a poet named Meta Heusser-Schweizer. In 1852, she married a lawyer named Bernhard Spyri. They had one son who was also named Bernhard. Sadly, both her husband and son died in 1884. After this loss, she spent her time on charitable causes. She also wrote more than fifty more stories. She lived until 1901 and is buried in Zürich.

Spyri wrote many books in the German language. Some of her other titles include The Story of Rico. She also wrote Vinzi: A Story of the Swiss Alps. Many people translated her work into English later on. People like Emma Stelter Hopkins helped bring her stories to new readers. Her writing reached many people around the world. She even wrote a song called "Rote Rosen am Hügel." This song became a popular Volkslied, or folk song.

Sometimes, people look closely at how stories are made. In 2010, a professor looked at an old book from 1830. This book was called Adelaide, the girl from the Alps. Some thought Spyri might have used it for Heidi. They saw many similarities in the plots and images. However, experts said these were just small coincidences. The characters in the two books are actually very different. Spyri likely knew many stories from her own book-filled home.
