She wrote many books for children. Her most famous book is called Heidi. It tells the story of an orphan girl. Heidi lives with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. This book shows the mountain landscape in a vivid way. Johanna wrote Heidi in only four weeks.

As a child, she spent summers near Chur. She used those mountains in her stories. She lived in the city of Zürich. There, she wrote about life in the country. Johanna faced hard times in her life. In 1884, her husband and her only child died. After that, she helped others through charity. She wrote over fifty more stories before she died in 1901.

People in Switzerland still honor her. Her face is on a postage stamp. It is also on a coin. Some people thought she copied an old story. They thought she used a book called Adelaide. But experts say the stories are very different. They say the similarities are just small accidents. Johanna wrote her books in German. Many people later translated them into English.
