Carl Spitteler was a famous poet from Switzerland. He was born in a place called Liestal. He studied law and religion at a university. He could have been a pastor. Instead, he chose to be a writer. He wanted to write epic poems. An epic poem is a very long story.

Spitteler wrote many different kinds of books. He wrote short stories and poems about myths. One famous work is called Olympic Spring. This work uses themes from nature and old myths. It looks at how humans feel about the universe. He also wrote a book called Prometheus and Epimetheus. This used characters from Greek myths. A thinker named Carl Jung studied this book. Jung used Spitteler's ideas to help his own work.

In 1919, Spitteler won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This is a very high honor for writers. He lived a busy life as a writer and a journalist. He also worked as a teacher. He died in the city of Lucerne in 1924. Today, people keep his old papers in special archives. These archives help us learn about his life and his art.
