Hesse was born in a town called Calw. He loved the St. Nicholas Bridge there.

His family loved words and music. His mother wrote poetry. His father worked with religious books. Hesse learned to read from his grandfather. This helped him feel like a citizen of the world.

As a young man, Hesse had a hard time. He went to a school called a seminary. He did not like it there. He even tried to run away. Later, he worked in a clock factory. The work was very dull. He turned to spiritual ideas instead.

Hesse worked in bookshops for many years. He spent his free time reading. He read about Greek myths and old poets. These books shaped his work. He wrote books like Siddhartha and The Glass Bead Game. In 1946, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
