Steppenwolf is a famous book by Hermann Hesse.

He was a writer from Germany and Switzerland. He wrote the story in the 1920s. The title comes from a German word for a wolf of the steppes. This is a large, grassy plain.

The story follows a man named Harry Haller. Harry feels like a stranger to the world. He feels he has two sides. One side is a high, spiritual part. The other side is a low, animal part. He feels like a wolf.

Harry meets a young woman named Hermine. She teaches him how to live fully. She shows him how to dance. She also introduces him to a man named Pablo. Pablo is a jazz saxophonist.

Hesse was inspired by jazz music while writing.

In the book, Harry visits a Magic Theatre. This place is like a dream. It helps him see his own mind. Hesse said many people misunderstood his book. They saw only his sadness. He wanted them to see healing. Many bands and theater groups use the name Steppenwolf today.
