Buddenbrooks is a famous novel by Thomas Mann. He wrote it in 1901. The book tells a long story about a family. This family is called the Buddenbrooks. They are grain merchants in a German city. For a long time, they are very rich and respected.

But the family story covers four generations. Over many years, things begin to change. The family starts to lose its wealth. Their big, fancy house even falls into disrepair. Mann shows how hard it is to keep up a business. He also shows the fight between business and art.

One young man in the family loves music. He is very good at it. However, he is not good at running the family business. This makes his father feel very sad. The world is also changing fast. New industries are growing in Germany. This makes life harder for the family.

Thomas Mann used his own family history for this book. It was so detailed that people knew his home town. This book helped Mann win the Nobel Prize in Literature. It is still a very popular story today.
