The Tin Drum is a famous book by Günter Grass. It was first published in 1959. The story is about a man named Oskar Matzerath. He writes his life story while staying in a hospital.

Oskar is a very special character. When he was a baby, he decided to stop growing. He stayed small like a child even as he got older. He also had a very powerful voice. He could use a loud shriek to break glass. Throughout his life, he always kept a toy tin drum. The drum was his most prized possession.

Oskar lives through many big events. He sees the start of World War II. Later, he moves to a new city. He joins a jazz band called the Rhine River Three. He becomes a famous and rich drummer. Eventually, he is sent to a mental hospital. There, he writes his memoirs.

The book was made into a movie in 1979. That film won two big awards. One was the Palme d'Or. The other was an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Many people now see this book as a classic story.
