The Tin Drum is a famous novel written by Günter Grass. It was first published in 1959. This book is the first part of his Danzig Trilogy. The story is told by a man named Oskar Matzerath. He writes his own life story while staying in a hospital. He writes these memoirs between the years 1952 and 1954.

Oskar is a very unusual character. He was born in 1924 in the Free City of Danzig. When he was a baby, he decided he would never grow up. He stayed small like a child even as he got older. He also had a very special voice. He could use a loud shriek to shatter glass. Throughout his life, he always kept a toy tin drum. This drum was his most treasured possession.

The story follows Oskar through many hard and big events. He lives through the start of World War II. He sees the German invasion of Poland. He also lives through the end of the war. Later, he moves to a new city called Düsseldorf. He joins a jazz band called the Rhine River Three. He even becomes a famous and rich drummer.

Oskar's life is full of different people. He has two men he calls his presumptive fathers. One is Alfred Matzerath, who was in the Nazi Party. The other is Jan Bronski, a man from Poland. He also meets a woman named Maria. She becomes his stepmother and stays with him after the war. Oskar also has a friend named Bebra. Bebra is a musical clown who helps him.

This book has changed many ways over time. People call it a classic of post-war literature. In 1979, a movie was made from the book. This film won a very big prize called the Palme d'Or. It also won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1980. Some people even turned the story into a radio show in 1996. It has even been performed on a stage in a theater.
