Pindar wrote this song for a leader named Hieron. Hieron lived in Syracuse. A horse named Pherenikos won a race for him in 476 BC. The song was meant to be sung with a phorminx. A phorminx is a stringed instrument.

The song also tells a myth about a hero named Pelops. Pindar says Pelops used a golden chariot to win a race. His horses even had wings that never got tired. This helped him win a princess named Hippodameia.

Pindar believed that songs and great deeds need each other. He thought songs make a person's success last. He wanted to be known for his wisdom. He hoped his poems would be famous among all Greeks. Some say his songs were very important in ancient times.
