He was born in 1622 in Hitzacker. His father was a preacher for a duke. Varenius spent his early years in Uelzen. He was a very bright student. He studied at several different universities. He went to Hamburg, Königsberg, and Leiden. At Leiden, he studied math and medicine. He earned his medical degree in 1649.

After university, Varenius moved to Amsterdam. He originally wanted to be a doctor there. However, new discoveries changed his interests. Dutch explorers like Abel Tasman were finding new things. Varenius became friends with many geographers. This led him to study the Earth instead. In 1649, he published a book about Japan. It included stories about the customs of different peoples. He also wrote about the religion of Siam. This work helped people learn about far away lands.

His most famous work was *Geographia Generalis*. He published this big book in 1650. He wanted to create a scientific way to study geography. The book followed ideas from Giuseppe Biancani. But Varenius added many new ideas from his own time. He divided the study into three clear parts. The first part was called absolute geography. It looked at the shape and size of the Earth. It also studied how the Earth moves.

The second part was called relative geography. This part looked at how the sun and stars affect us. It studied climates and the changing seasons. It even looked at how day length changes. The third part was comparative geography. This part looked at the surface of the Earth. It covered how to make maps and use longitude. It also helped people learn about navigation. This helped sailors travel the wide oceans safely.
