Charismatic Christianity is a way of being Christian that focuses on the Holy Spirit. Followers believe the Spirit works in their daily lives through special gifts. These gifts can include things like prophecy or healing others. Many people in this group expect to see miracles and signs. They believe these supernatural events are part of their faith. This way of believing is shared by many people around the world.

This movement is often split into three different groups. The first group is called Pentecostalism. They believe in a special moment called being baptized in the Holy Spirit. For many, this is shown by speaking in tongues. The second group is the charismatic movement. These people stay in their traditional churches but embrace these spiritual gifts. The third group is the neo-charismatic movement. Some people call this the "Third Wave" to show it is a newer stage.

Pentecostalism began to grow at the start of the 1900s. Leaders like Charles Fox Parham and William J. Seymour helped it spread. Seymour started a ministry in Los Angeles in 1906. The charismatic movement started later in 1960. It began at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Van Nuys, California. A leader named Dennis Bennett announced he received the Holy Spirit there. This helped the movement spread to many other types of churches.

Different churches joined the movement at different times. The movement reached Lutherans and Presbyterians in 1962. It spread to Roman Catholics around 1967. Methodists became involved during the 1970s. Some new churches also started, like Calvary Chapel in California in 1965. In the United Kingdom, the Jesus Army was founded in 1969. These groups have grown into many different places across the globe.

There are many followers of these beliefs today. In 2011, there were 279 million Pentecostals in the world. There were also 305 million charismatic Christians. Together, these groups make up over 584 million people. Most of them live in the Americas. A large number also live in the Asia-Pacific region. Many people think mass media helps these groups grow so quickly.
