Charismatic Christianity is a diverse form of Christianity. It emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit in daily life. Followers believe in spiritual gifts, which are supernatural abilities. These gifts can include prophecy and healing. Many practitioners expect to see miracles or signs in their lives. People in this movement are often called charismatic Christians or renewalists. The term "charismatic" comes from a Greek word meaning "gift." In the 17th century, this word specifically referred to divine gifts.

This movement is generally divided into three distinct categories. The first category is Pentecostalism. This group includes classical denominations like the Assemblies of God. The second category is the charismatic movement. These are people who practice these beliefs within traditional, mainline churches. The third category is the neo-charismatic movement. Some scholars call this the "Third Wave." These churches are often independent or non-denominational. They accept spiritual gifts but may reject specific labels.

Pentecostalism has a unique history and set of doctrines. It grew from the holiness movement in the early 20th century. Leaders like Charles Fox Parham and William J. Seymour were very influential. Seymour founded a Pentecostal ministry in Los Angeles in 1906. Pentecostals believe in a "second work of grace" called baptism in the Holy Spirit. They often see speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, as evidence of this. Some groups, called Oneness Pentecostals, have different views on the Godhead. They also focus on salvation, healing, and the return of Jesus.

The charismatic movement represents a different way these beliefs spread. It began to move into mainline Protestant churches around 1960. A key moment happened at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in California. The rector, Dennis Bennett, announced he received the Holy Spirit. This helped the movement reach Lutherans and Presbyterians by 1962. It spread to Roman Catholics around 1967 and Methodists in the 1970s. Charismatics often stay in their historic churches while embracing these gifts. They may not see speaking in tongues as a requirement for baptism.

The neo-charismatic movement emerged as a newer wave of growth. This movement began to spread widely after 1970. It is often called the "Third Wave" to show its place in history. Many neo-charismatic churches, like Calvary Chapel, started as independent evangelical churches. Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa was founded in 1965. In the United Kingdom, the Jesus Army was founded in 1969. These churches often focus on the practical use of spiritual gifts. They might identify with larger religious movements instead of single denominations.

There are significant numbers of people following these traditions. In 2011, there were 279 million Pentecostal Christians worldwide. This accounted for 12.8 percent of all Christians. There were also 305 million charismatic Christians. This group made up about 14 percent of the Christian population. Together, they numbered over 584 million people. This total represents about 8 percent of the entire world's population. The highest concentration of these believers lives in the Americas. The Asia-Pacific region holds the next largest group.

Scholars have studied why these movements grew so quickly. Some believe the use of mass media helped them spread. Others point to the physical experience of religion. This provides a personal connection to spiritual mediation for believers. The movement is also linked to other global religious shifts. For example, it has been compared to the New Age revival. It also shares some characteristics with the rise of Kundalini in Hindu mysticism. These connections show how deeply these ideas impact the global religious landscape.
