The Schwarzenau Brethren are a group of Christians with a very unique history. They began in the year 1708 in a small German community called Schwarzenau. This group wanted to follow the teachings of the New Testament very closely. They felt that the large state churches in Europe did not follow these ideas well. Instead, they wanted to live out the idea of brotherly love in their daily lives.

Their way of worship includes many special things that people call ordinances. One famous practice is their way of baptism. They practice what is called threefold immersion. This means a person kneels in the water and is dipped face first three times. They also hold a special event called a Love Feast. This is an evening meal that includes communion and the washing of feet. They also use prayer and anointing with oil to help the sick.

A leader named Alexander Mack helped organize the first group in Germany. He wanted a church with clear rules that people could see and follow. Some early members were also influenced by a traveling minister named Ernst Christopher Hochmann von Hochenau. Because they faced hard times in Europe, many moved to new places. In 1719, Peter Becker led a group to the Netherlands. Later, in 1723, he started the first American congregation in Germantown, Pennsylvania.

The Brethren had a big impact on life in early America. In 1743, a man named Christoph Sauer printed a German Bible. This was the very first Bible printed in a European language in North America. Many of these families spoke a specific dialect. This helped create what people now call Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania German. Over time, the group grew and moved west across the United States. By 1908, they had many members in states like Ohio, Indiana, and California.

Today, the Brethren are divided into a few different types of groups. Some are called Old Order groups. These people live very simply and do not use much modern technology. Other groups are called Conservative groups. They keep their traditional beliefs but do use modern things like electricity. Finally, there are mainline groups. These groups are more part of modern society and popular culture. Even though they are different, they all share the same roots from 1708.
