Angelica Kauffman was a famous painter who lived a very busy life.

She was born in Switzerland in 1741. Her father, Joseph Johann Kauffmann, was a painter who taught her his skills. Angelica was a child prodigy who learned four languages very quickly. She could speak German, Italian, French, and English. She was also a talented singer and musician. However, she had to choose between music and art. A priest told her that the opera was a dangerous place. Because of this, she chose to focus on her painting career.

Kauffman was a master of many different types of art. She painted portraits, landscapes, and decorations. She was most proud of being a history painter. History painting means showing stories from history, myths, or books. This was considered the most important kind of art. To do this well, she had to study many things. She learned about the human body by looking at old drawings and plaster models. Most women were not allowed to do this kind of study back then. She also painted a famous series called The Elements of Art. This included works named Invention, Design, Composition, and Coloring.

Her life took her to many beautiful cities in Europe. She grew up in Switzerland and moved to Austria. Later, she lived in Italy in places like Como, Florence, and Rome. In 1762, she discovered the Neoclassical style of painting in Florence. She moved to Naples to study the works of Old Masters. In 1763, she visited Rome and became very popular there. A man named Winckelmann wrote about how much people liked her. He said she could even compete with the best singers. She was always traveling to find new places to paint and learn.

In 1766, Kauffman moved to England and became a leading artist. She was very well received by the royal family. She even became a founding member of the Royal Academy of Art in 1768. She was one of only two women among the founders. Her friend, Sir Joshua Reynolds, was also a famous painter. They were very close and even painted portraits of each other. In 1771, she spent time in Ireland painting important people. She painted many people, including the Earl of Ely and his family. Her name was even listed with "R.A." after it in the Academy's catalogue.
