Long ago, a king ruled France.

Louis XIV was the King of France for a very long time.

As a child, Louis saw many fights in his land.

Louis also loved the arts. He helped painters and musicians make great works. He even helped start the French Academy of Sciences.
Louis XIV was a very powerful king of France. He ruled for 72 years and 110 days. This is the longest time any monarch has ever ruled.
His rule changed how France was governed.

Louis had a very difficult childhood.

Louis XIV was also known for his many wars. He fought the Franco-Dutch War and the Nine Years' War. He also fought the War of the Spanish Succession.
Even with wars, Louis supported many great things.
Louis XIV was the King of France from 1643 until 1715. He is a primary symbol of the Age of Absolutism in Europe. This was a period when monarchs held supreme, centralized power. Louis XIV styled himself as "Le Roi Soleil," or "The Sun King." This title portrayed him as the center of the French universe. He believed in the divine right of kings. This doctrine suggested that his authority came directly from God.
Louis XIV's path to power began during a very unstable childhood. He was born on 5 September 1638 at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

In 1661, following the death of Cardinal Mazarin, Louis XIV began his personal rule. He moved to eliminate the remnants of feudalism in France. He wanted a centralized state governed from a single capital. To control the nobility, he compelled them to reside at his Palace of Versailles.

Warfare was a defining element of Louis XIV's foreign policy. He was driven by a personal ambition for glory and power. He described his motivations as a mix of commerce, revenge, and pique. During his reign, France emerged as the leading European power. He fought several major continental conflicts. These included the Franco-Dutch War and the Nine Years' War. He also fought the War of the Spanish Succession, which began in 1701.
Despite the cost of war, Louis XIV was a massive patron of the arts. His court at Versailles defined the Baroque style of French architecture.
The impact of his long reign was massive and complex. He transformed France into a centralized, absolute monarchy. However, his constant warfare left a heavy burden on the kingdom. By the time he died in 1715, France was in major debt. This debt was largely due to the War of the Spanish Succession. He left his great-grandson, Louis XV, a kingdom that was powerful but war-weary. His life connected the era of feudalism to the era of the modern centralized state. His influence on culture, science, and government shaped Europe for generations.
