history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sonni Ali was a very powerful ruler. He led the Songhay Empire for many years. He ruled from about 1464 to 1492. This made him the 15th leader of the Sunni dynasty.

He was also called Si Ali or Sonni Ali Ber. The name Ber means "the Great." He turned a small state into a huge empire. This changed the history of the region forever.

Ali used many ways to grow his land. He built a strong fleet of boats on the Niger River. In 1473, he used these boats to siege the city of Djenne. The city surrendered after people ran out of food. He even tried a huge building project. He tried to dig a canal from Ras el Ma. He wanted to move his boats to the town of Walata. He had to stop this work in 1483. This was to fight an invasion by the Mossi people.

His life began with many different traditions. His father was Sonni Muhammad Da'o. His mother came from an area called Fara. This area held many old African beliefs. Ali received an Islamic education as well. He practiced a mix of these different faiths. He was a Muslim who prayed and fasted. But he also honored trees and stones. Some writers say he used magicians or soothsayers too.

Ali's rule was not always easy for everyone. He ruled over city Muslims and rural non-Muslims. Many scholars in Timbuktu were angry with him. They did not like his mixed beliefs. They also did not like his strict rules. However, some records say he was kind to some scholars. He said they made life more pleasant. He lived in places like Gao and Kukiya. He also stayed at Kabara and Tindirma.

The end of his rule is a mystery. He died on November 6, 1492. One story says he drowned in the Niger River. Another story says his nephew killed him. His son, Sunni Baru, became king right away. But a man named Askia challenged him. Askia thought Baru was not a faithful Muslim. Askia won and took power for himself.
