history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sonni Ali was a great ruler. He led the Songhay Empire. He ruled from about 1464 to 1492. He was the 15th leader of his family.

Ali made his land much bigger. He took over many places. He won the city of Timbuktu. He also took Djenne. To do this, he used a fleet of boats. These boats traveled on the Niger River. He even tried to dig a long canal. He wanted to move his boats to new lands.

Ali had many different beliefs. He was a Muslim. He prayed and fasted. But he also followed old African ways. He honored trees and stones. This made some scholars angry. They did not like his ways. Yet, Ali still showed respect to some scholars. He said they made life pleasant.

Ali died in 1492. Some say he drowned in a river. Others say he was killed. His son, Sunni Baru, became king first. But a man named Askia took power later. Askia defeated Baru to rule the empire.
