When Ögedei died in 1241, Töregene took control. She acted as a regent. A regent is a person who rules for someone else. She ruled until 1246. During this time, she picked many new officials to help her. One important helper was a woman named Fatima.

Töregene was very busy ruling a large land. She sent leaders to fight the Song dynasty in China. In 1243, Mongol troops won a big battle at Köse Dağ. After this, many groups joined the Mongol Empire.
