Töregene Khatun was a very powerful woman in the Mongol Empire. She was born into a group called the Naimans. Later, she became the second wife of Ögedei Khan. They had five sons together named Güyük, Kötän, Köchü, Qarachar, and Qashi.

She grew very influential among the officials at the royal court. This happened even though many leaders in her society were men. She worked hard to manage the large empire during a busy time. Her leadership helped her family stay in power for a long time.

When Ögedei Khan died in 1241, a new way of ruling began. At first, a widow named Möge Khatun held the power. However, Töregene took full control as a regent in the spring of 1242. A regent is a person who rules for someone else.

She replaced many of her husband's old ministers with her own people. One of her most important helpers was a woman named Fatima. Fatima was a Persian woman from the city of Mashhad. These changes helped Töregene run the empire her own way.

Ruling a huge empire meant Töregene had to deal with many wars. In 1242, the Mongols invaded Sichuan and captured Hangzhou.

She also sent leaders to fight the Song dynasty in China. In 1243, a big battle happened at a place called Köse Dağ. Mongol troops won this battle against the Sultanate of Rum. Because of this win, many new lands joined the Mongol Empire. These lands included the Empire of Trebizond and Lesser Armenia. Töregene's decisions changed the map of the world back then.

Many famous people traveled from far away to visit her. They came to her capital at Karakorum or to her camp.

Some visitors came from Turkey and the city of Baghdad. Even leaders from Europe traveled to see her. One visitor was a Grand Prince from the land of Vladimir. Töregene used these meetings to show her strength. She managed many different groups of people at once. This was a very hard job for any leader.

Most of all, Töregene wanted her son Güyük to be the next Great Khan. She used her power to make sure he was chosen. She waited to hold a big meeting called a Kurultai. This delay helped make sure Güyük had the most support. Finally, she passed power to him in 1246.
