Nogai was a very powerful leader in the Golden Horde. This was a large state ruled by the Mongols. He was a grandson of the famous Genghis Khan. Even though he was never the official king, he acted like one. He was often called a kingmaker because he helped choose leaders. People in Europe thought he was one of the strongest men alive.

Nogai was a skilled general who led huge armies. He often led groups of 10,000 or even 30,000 warriors. He was a very important commander for his uncle, Berke Khan. One of his biggest wins was at the Terek River in 1263. He used a clever ambush to defeat the army of Hulegu. This victory made his reputation grow very fast.

His life was full of big changes and many travels. He grew up in a family of famous Mongol leaders. His father, Tatar, died while serving in a far land. Later, Nogai became a leader of his own lands. He ruled the areas west of the Dnieper River. He even made his own choices about how to deal with other countries.

Nogai also made important friends through marriage and gifts. In 1266, he married a princess named Euphrosyne. She came from the Byzantine Empire, which was a very old and famous land. The Emperor gave Nogai many jewels and fine clothes as gifts. Nogai liked his simple dog skins better than the fancy clothes. He even joked about whether the jewels could stop lightning.

Not every journey Nogai took was a success. In the winter of 1285, he led an invasion into Hungary. He and another leader named Talabuga tried to take the land. However, the Hungarian people fought back very hard. They used stone castles and strong walls to stop the Mongols. The campaign was a big setback for Nogai's army.
