He was the son of Börte and the leader Temüjin, who became known as Genghis Khan. Jochi's life was full of difficult questions about his family. Before he was born, Börte was captured by a group called the Merkit tribe. Because of this event, many people doubted who his real father was. His name even means "guest" in the Mongolian language. Even with these doubts, Genghis Khan always treated Jochi as his own son.

Family arguments caused much trouble for Jochi and his brothers.

His brother Chagatai was very upset about Jochi's birth. This tension grew so strong that both brothers were left out of the line to lead the empire. Jochi also had trouble when his father tried to arrange a marriage for him. An alliance with a leader named Toghrul failed because of these family doubts. This disagreement even led to a war between the two leaders. Eventually, Jochi married several women, including his niece Begtütmish.

Jochi became a very important military commander as the empire grew.

In 1206, Genghis Khan officially started the Mongol Empire. He gave Jochi a huge area to rule in the west. This land was located near the Irtysh River. Jochi was given nine thousand warriors to lead. He used these soldiers to win many battles. He helped the Mongols take control of gold mines and trade in furs. He also fought against the Merkit people to secure his new lands.

Later, Jochi was part of a large war against the Khwarazmian Empire.

This war began in 1218 after a trade caravan was killed. Jochi led his army along the Syr Darya river. He helped capture many cities along the way. One of the biggest battles was at a city called Gurganj. The fighting there lasted for many months and was very fierce. During this time, Jochi and his brothers had many arguments. They disagreed on how to treat the city and its people.

These fights with his family changed Jochi's future.

Because of the arguments at Gurganj, Jochi lost the favor of his father. Genghis Khan was unhappy with how the war went. Jochi also did not send the correct amount of treasure back to his father. Jochi eventually died after being ill. However, his family line stayed very strong. His son Batu was chosen to rule Jochi's lands. Batu's descendants went on to rule a place called the Golden Horde.
